1. In 2001 ALA applied for a grant assigned from SMILETRAIN for an educative project which goal is the improvement of the knowledge of the staff working at Bulgarian orphanages and at maternity hospitals about the problems concerning the clefts lip and palate. All this is an answer of the fact that 60% of the parents of the children born with cleft are advised by the doctors, gynecologist and neonatologist, and another 30% by midwives to leave the children at the orphanages. ALA finds that exactly this lack of information is harming the patients with lip and/or palate cleft more than any other problem.

   2. Speech therapy improvement
The creation of an educational film destined for speech therapists and parents for diagnosis and treatment of speech disorders in patients with cleft palate.

   Consists of an operation of the lip, using a modification of the Millard's technique, an operation of the palate using Wardill-Kilner-Veau technique with a section of the nasal layer and a gingivoperiostoplasty(GPP).

   Usually the lip is operated at birth (for protruded bilateral cases) or at age of 2-3 months in the other cases. The palate - at age of 10 months and the GPP - between 3 and 5 years. Here the patient arrived when 2 years old and all the operations were done at once.
   It happens to carry out an orthodontic treatment with nickel - titane arcs during the GPP.
